My name is Sara Spano and I am an Italian student of the ITESS programme at NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences (Groningen, NL). My dream is to teach English and ITESS offers me the opportunity to do it anywhere I want in the whole World.

I have studied foreign languages my entire life:

I have a High School Diploma in Foreign Languages and Literatures (English, French and German), a Bachelor’s Degree in Linguistic Mediation —my Thesis was about the “Teaching in Diversity” project— and a CELTA certificate that allows me to teach English online and in language centers, but not in schools.

As an autodidact, I have learned and am still improving Modern Greek, Dutch and Spanish. These are among my favourite languages, but I am deeply in love with the English grammar and phonetics, which I would love to master and teach in the future.

During the CELTA course I realised that teaching is what I actually want to do for a living. However, after completing it I did not feel ready to start working in this field yet, because there are many things I still needed to learn, such as students’ diverse backgrounds, adolescent development, and, most importantly, teaching skills. Therefore, after a long research process, I came to the conclusion that the wisest choice for me to achieve my goal would not be to apply for a Master’s Programme, but for “ITESS”, a Bachelor's Programme that focusses on the “main subject field” —in my case English— in addition to themes, such as Educational Studies and Professional Identity, as well as including several Teaching Practice weeks. All of these domains are exactly what I believe is essential to develop and improve soft and hard skills and become one of the best professionals in the educational field.

What is my approach towards students?

I am very compassionate: I consider myself a maternal figure and I like having a friendly approach towards my students. I want them to trust me and feel safe in my classes.

School needs to be a positive environment, where kids feel

valued, not evaluated.

Moreover, I have always struggled with anxiety and for this reason I will never overload my students with homework or behave unfairly to them, because I know how it feels to be treated unjustly. However, I need to work on my authority, because I know teenagers tend to be rebellious at times. Therefore, I need to develop a way to be nice and authoritative at the same time.

Goals

In four years from now I would like to be the best version of myself, like I was during the CELTA course (see pictures down below), just more knowledgeable and confident about my subject,

the lesson planning and teaching techniques.
